At every change, the skin on your baby's bottom is exposed to moisture and friction from the diaper. Nappy cream creates a protective film between the skin and moisture. Here is how to choose it, how to apply it properly, and the two products we recommend at Petit'Éclat.
Why use nappy cream?
The bottom is one of the most stressed areas of your baby's body: the diaper creates a warm, damp environment, and the skin rubs against it all day. Nappy cream forms a barrier between the skin and moisture, leaving the skin on the bottom soft and comfortable. Many parents apply a thin layer at every change, while others apply it mainly during the evening change: follow the directions on your cream.
What is a "clean" nappy cream?
A "clean" nappy cream is first and foremost a short, easy-to-read formula designed for babies, with the recommended age indicated on the packaging. The ingredients list often includes:
- zinc oxide, the star ingredient in nappy creams, which forms the protective barrier;
- plant oils and butters (sweet almond, avocado, shea) that nourish the skin;
- plant extracts such as calendula or aloe vera.
The right approach: read the ingredients list (the INCI list). The shorter it is, the easier it is to understand.

How to apply nappy cream properly?
- Clean your baby's bottom with warm water or with a liniment, such as the Monjour oleo-calcaire liniment (from birth, rinse-free), applied with a cotton pad or a washable wipe.
- Dry gently by patting, especially without rubbing, and do not forget the creases.
- Apply a layer of cream over the entire bottom area, including the creases.
- Leave it exposed to the air for a few seconds if possible before closing the diaper.
Do you need nappy cream at every change?
It all depends on your baby's skin and the directions on your cream: a thin layer at every change, or mainly during the evening change, before the longest night in the diaper. If your baby's bottom is red, change the diaper more often, leave the bottom exposed to the air for a few minutes, and apply a thicker layer of cream. If the redness persists for more than 48 hours, spreads, oozes, or is accompanied by bumps, seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
